Creative Employees Join The Fights Against Breast Cancer

Creative employees, friends and family members participate in the 11th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Hillsborough County fundraising event

Tampa, Fla. (October 22, 2011) – There are 2.5 million breast cancer survivors alive in the United States today, and each of them celebrated another birthday this year with help from the American Cancer Society.  This year, the American Cancer Society’s Florida Division launched the “Put On Your Pink Bra” campaign, empowering people across Florida to wear pink bras in support of the fight against breast cancer.

Over 30 employees, friends and family members from Creative Sign Designs and Creative Mailbox & Sign Designs joined the fight on Saturday, October 22nd at the St. Pete Time Forum in downtown Tampa.  Kelly Crandall, Director of Sales and Co-Owner, showed her enthusiasm: “It was a great experience walking with my company teammates and my two daughters in support of one of my good friends, who I am glad to say is a breast cancer survivor!”

Team Creative was the #18 team, raising over $4,000 for the cure and joining the 2011 Team Fundraising Club as a Bronze Team (for teams raising at least $2,500).  The 11th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k (3.2 miles) walk set an attendance record with over 12,000 walkers raising over $550,000 for the cure.

“I am so proud to be the Team Captain at our events,” said Nicole Cavalani, Marketing Communications Specialist for Creative.  “I know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and to see my fellow employees and their families devote their time and effort to help find a cure for the disease is truly rewarding.”

Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers across the United States have raised more than $400 million to help fight breast cancer through Making Strides events.  Funds raised through Making Strides help the American Cancer Society to educate and empower women to live healthy lives and reduce their risk for breast cancer by getting screening tests such as mammograms to find breast cancer early.  The survival rate if breast cancer is detected early, before it spreads, is 98 percent.  If breast cancer is diagnosed in a late stage, the survival rate plummets to only 23 percent.

The Making Strides program provides day-to-day help and emotional support to guide people through every step of their breast cancer experience, invests in and conducts research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries, and supports laws that help women battle breast cancer and help all women get access to screenings and care.  Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women; breast cancer kills more women than any other cancer type, except lung cancer.

Florida ranks second in the nation of the number of people who die from breast cancer.  There is a 1 in 8 chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. “This number is staggering to me.  That’s why I got involved.  I looked around at our employees and my family and friends, and I realized how many women I know will be affected by the disease,” said Jamie Harden, Creative President & CEO.  “We have to find a cure.”

Creative employees and their families to their part for the community by contributing hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of dollars annually to numerous charitable organizations such as Morton Plant Mease, Baycare HealthCare System, YMCA of the Suncoast, Habitat for Humanity, American Heart Association, All Children’s Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and most recently the Walk to Defeat ALS at the University of South Florida on March 12, 2011.
